Highly reliable sources have confirmed that the next iPod mini will gain a full-color active-matrix TFT screen while the form factor will remain largely unchanged. The color screen will be able to display colors clearly and brightly regardless of ambient lighting, even outdoors in direct sunlight. The new screen will be about the same size as the current iPod mini display and will sport a 176x132 resolution.

ThinkSecret also reports that Apple will shift its full line of iPods away from monochrome displays over the course of the year, a tip AppleInsider can partially confirm. According to sources, Apple will soon discontinue the 40GB iPod with a monochrome display. Sources said Apple will likely fill this gap by reducing the cost of its 40GB iPhoto model to $399, and subsequently the 60GB model to $499 — both of which have been selling poorly at their current price points.

Checks from inside Apple also confirm the name change to Bonjour. According to extremely well-placed sources, the latest internal builds of Apple’s next-generation Tiger operating system have shed all mention of the Rendezvous name in favor of Bonjour. Builds of Tiger are fast approaching the 8A39x milestone, and subsequently an official release within the next few months, sources said.

These “general issues” pertain to sluggishness of the Mac OS X Dock, Spotlight indexing and FireWire drives, Keychain syncing corruption, and non-updating window titles. The build’s notes also reference bugs associated with authentication dialogs and the .Mac Sync preference panel.

Apple has reportedly been working on the Mac OS X 10.3 Panther update for a few weeks — the ninth such update that will be released for the OS since its inception. Details of the update are yet unknown, but sources claim that Apple has begun seeding builds of the system internally. External seeds of the update are expected within the next couple of weeks. More details will be published when they become available.
